PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Independent Risk Management Consultant – Pittsburgh, PA                         2015 - Current

Providing risk management and risk engineering consultancy (primarily for Paragon Risk Engineering) for higher education campuses, fuel cell manufacturing, hospitality and gaming, ethanol fuel production, large retail, office, manufacturing clients and global insurers. 

 

Marsh & McLennan Companies (Marsh Risk Consulting) – Pittsburgh, PA  2001 - 2015

Marsh is one of the world’s largest corporations proving insurance brokerage and risk management consulting

 

Vice President       (2003 – 2015)

Served as consulting manager, senior consultant and outsourced safety manager to a wide variety of domestic/international clients. Managed coached and mentored 21 casualty claims and safety consultants in both the Dallas and Pittsburgh offices with annual consulting budgets ranging from $5 million to $7 million. Enhanced existing, developed new core programs and audited client’s loss prevention, regulatory compliance and claims processes that drove risk improvements and reduced premium/accident/fines and costs from several thousand dollars to more than $30 million.                                                                                                                                               

Served as outsourced safety and loss control manager to an international firm with more than 4,000 service techs and 25 manufacturing facilities in all 50 states and 20 countries.  Initiated, wrote and trained line and staff management nationally in a new mandatory corporate loss control process that helped retain revenues of more than $8 million in sales with major energy client.

 

Managed multiple consultants who worked on a claims closure project that reduced the client’s accrual accounts by more than $30 million

Provided concise strategic property loss prevention (PLP) reports/recommendation/risk assessments for a large domestic energy firm that resulted in significant risk reduction and premium savings.

Lead and trained a client who had a near catastrophic hydrochloric acid spill in a hazard and operability (HAZOP) process. Recommendations reduced risk significantly and improved compliance.

Provided more than 50 compliance recommendations for risk and compliance improvement as a member of a chemical client’s OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) audit team.

 

Conducted machine guarding and OSHA compliance surveys at manufacturing plants in 5 states.

 

Conducted fleet safety, dispatcher and manager LP training for a large national equipment rental company in more than 12 states that helped reduced accident costs and improve culture. 

 

Assistant Vice President (2001 – 2003)

Completed loss prevention surveys and presentations for domestic and international clients for submission to insurers that helped secure coverage and/or reduce insurance costs.  

 

Conducted property/safety/workers compensation (WC) gap analysis for university/health care/oil and gas clients which included targeted recommendations for strategic risk improvements.

 

 

Completed PLP reports for submission to London markets for major international steel producer.

 

Assisted in the design, plan review and acceptance testing of their first hot strip detection and suppression system in Europe and other systems in the US.  

 

SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC (formerly INVENSYS) – London England               1998 - 2001

Invensys was a global leader in the manufacture, installation and service of appliance and energy control systems.

 

Divisional Director of Risk Management (Invensys Controls Division)

Provided Divisional RM and EH&S leadership for multinational energy service and manufacturing firm of more than 30,000 employees worldwide with a limited staff of direct reports and annual budget of more than $12 million.

 

Aggregated, analyzed and provided divisional risk management data and reports for all lines of coverage to the London based VP of Corporate Risk Management.   

 

Assisted in coverage negotiations and renewal meetings with brokers and carriers for optimal insurance coverage at the lowest cost.

Managed brokers/carriers/lawyers handling property, WC, general liability (GL), product liability (PL) and auto claims ranging from $10 thousand to more than $25 million.

 

Enhanced and improved claim charge back/accountability systems and simplified the claims processes and realized annual savings of more than $1 million.  

 

Created the division’s first RM intranet site that included claims instructions, model emergency plans, emergency contact numbers and compliance reference and guidance materials and links.  

 

Chaired the division’s first international EH&S professional development conference for safety managers/operations leaders that included workshops and presentation by Charlie Morecraft. 

 

DOMINION RESOURCES - formerly Consolidated Natural Gas (CNG)       1986 -1998

 

CNG consisted of CNG Development, Producing, and Transmission, and gas companies in OH, PA, WV, and VA.

 

Corporate Manager of Loss Control

 

Management and leadership for fire protection, health and safety, loss prevention and claims for a $5 billion corporation with oil and gas exploration, production, storage, and gas distribution companies.

 

Assisted in insurance data gathering and carrier meetings with the Vice President of RM to help maximize coverage and minimize premiums.

Managed services provided by Factory Mutual Inc. to more than 50 compressor stations/processing and distribution facilities to minimized operational impact and maximized carrier impression of risk.

Completed quarterly fire protection and safety audits of as a member of the CNG EH&S offshore team.

 

Provided recommendations for operated & partner platforms/drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.

 

Initiated and helped manage OSHA PSM process for a natural gas liquids processing facility.

Authored the corporation’s first Occupational H&S and Loss Prevention audit program.

 

Managed property, WC, GL and fleet claims to assure appropriate claim handling at minimum cost.

 

Chaired quarterly large loss and monthly claim reviews of Auto, GL, and WC claims with carriers. 

 

Responded to and provided presentations for board meetings
